Jab Harry Met Sejal: For People Who Still Believe in Love
While most of the people have adopted a practical lifestyle and approach, some, may be a tiny minority of people still believe in love. Thank you Imtiaz Ali, Shahrukh Khan and Anushka Sharma for keeping their hopes alive with Jab Harry Met Sejal.
It’s true. Our generation has resorted to finding their partners on Tinder and keeping their hopes on people they meet in social media. Love was never meant to be that.
May be that is what’s wrong with Jab Harry Met Sejal. It’s a simple movie about love, just the old school love. I feel sad that we’ve come so far that the idea of two people falling in love and having a clichéd happy ending appears dull and boring. Imtiaz is not at his best in the movie, I agree and it could have had a shorter second half, but for the most part of the movie, I had a stupid smile on my face because it felt good.
I love movies where I can have good feeling in my heart and feel happiness embracing me because people hardly make them anymore.
When Harry Met Sejal actually takes you on a journey of how two people who were stranger to each other can fall in love if their hearts connect. It doesn’t introduce the characters and take them to bed in the next scene. All Imtiaz’s movies are about a journey and here, it is a journey of love. It is that journey that is beautiful. However, not all will agree because we are used to ride on a blazing roller coaster in real life in the modern world.
I loved the acts. Shahrukh Khan and Anushka Sharma shared an amazing chemistry (which we have already seen in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi) and delivered terrific acts. In fact, both of them are the best thing about Jab Harry Met Sejal.
There are several good dialogues in the movie, some good lyrics/music (Hawayein is my favorite) and neatly integrated sub-themes. In a particular scene it is emphasized that you should express yourself because your role ends there. What the other person thinks about it and how they revert is on them. I admire Imtiaz Ali for putting such elements. In the same scene Harry tells his friend that even if Sejal is gone, he doesn’t have to forget her because he felt happy with her and it was the best time of his life.
All these things is what made Jab Harry Met Sejal a good watch for me. You might not agree with me because everyone perceive things differently. But if you are looking for an honest opinion, this review is coming from a guy who believes in the old school love. I’m one of those guys who could feel emotions brewing up in his heart when Harry shouted Sejal’s name at a sea shore and I could hear the echo of his voice in the theater. If you can relate, you will like Jab Harry Met Sejal.
PS, if we can keep watching the same superheroes defeating the same super villains who are keen to destroy the world again and again, if we can watch transforming robots fight each other every two years, if we don’t mind the same overdone and futuristic visual effects layered on top of almost every movie, we certainly don’t mind watching Imtiaz Ali recreate the same theme in his movies. This is strictly on behalf of his fans.
PPS, I think critics are over reacting and over bashing a good movie. May be they were not paid because if a person giving 4 stars to Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and 2.5 stars to Grand Masti gives 1.5 to Jab Harry Met Sejal, you know something is wrong!
