Why is it Hard to Forget Someone who Meant Everything to You?

We all come across a time when we fall in love with a person. For some, it is just a casual infatuation, for some it leads to a casual affair, but some people really fall with an unconditional devotion towards their partner. Things seem to fall in place and you start building your dreams together. You see your future and it is the best feeling in the world. If it goes through as planned, you should be the happiest person on the planet. Some people, however, are not fortunate enough. I read a question on Quora where such a person had asked – “Why is it so hard to forget someone with whom you once wanted to spend your entire life with? (Even after knowing everything is over)”

Forgetting someone you love is not an easy thing, especially if that love was serious. While your peers may suggest you a vibrant variety of ways to forget someone, it is still one of the most difficult step you will ever face in your life.

Fore mostly, if you wanted to spend your entire life with the person, you had already taken your relationship to a new level. When you decided that, you had begun brewing a possible future for you in your mind and it was the happiest thing you could imagine. You had started knitting a perfect world for the both of you where there were no compromises; you guys could understand each other under any circumstances and find a way out. Together, you could do things that pleased the both of you, you could hear the same music, hold your hands walking down the street, get drenched in the rain and stay awake at night under the stars because you both loved to do it.

When that person leaves, your whole world shatters. The dreams that you saw lay hopeless. I’m not talking about just a moment, but that pain can continue for weeks, months or years. Forget love, you are afraid you might not find someone who understand you that well. You fail to replace the face with someone else because a different person comes with different nature and different likes. You believe that it can never be the same and in your heart, you know it’s true. How can you forget someone who meant that much to you?

Life never promises you to be easy. People leave; sometimes willingly, sometimes under uncontrollable circumstances and it’s hard not to miss them. May be you don’t need to forget someone with whom you had once seen your future. May be you can keep the memories in your heart forever. It’s possible that you may move on in your life without forgetting the person.

If you look, you will always be able to find a person who understands you and then, your memories will stop troubling you so much. They will just take a corner in your heart and stay while you make a thousand more. It might take time, but you will, only if you are looking.

  1. Love is complex. It tears you inside out. It’s never easy to see someone loving you after she becomes your world and you made plans to be with her. It took me a long time to get out and flushed dating out of my system. It becomes a turmoil. You’ve penned this post in a sensitive manner. But, I guess we need to take care of the self after some point and never be shy of meeting new people.

    • I agree with you Vishal; that’s the way t move forward. Every one does, I guess and I have been told so too, but some people might take longer than others. That’s the way of life and that’s why every individual is different. Congrats on moving out of it 🙂

  2. Some people just cannot be replaced. They change you in such a way that your own reflection reminds you of them. Even if you try to move on with a nice partner, their memories can haunt you badly and mess up your life. It’s really difficult forgetting someone who meant so much to you.
This is such a well-written post, Anmol. Very empathetic, compassionate, sensitive and emotional. It was great reading it.
